Mining WordNet for fuzzy sentiment: Sentiment tag extraction from WordNet glosses

Many of the tasks required for semantic tagging of phrases and texts rely on a list of words annotated with some semantic features. We present a method for extracting sentiment-bearing adjectives from WordNet using the Sentiment Tag Extraction Program (STEP). We did 58 STEP runs on unique non-intersecting seed lists drawn from manually annotated list of positive and negative adjectives and evaluated the results against other manually annotated lists. The 58 runs were then collapsed into a single set of 7, 813 unique words.

The diffusion of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the consequent increase in the production and exchange of textual information demand the development of effective information retrieval systems. The HyperText Markup Language (HTML) constitues a common basis for generating documents over the internet and the intranets. By means of the HTML the author is allowed to organize the text into subparts delimited by special tags; these subparts are then visualized by the HTML browser in distinct ways, i.e. with distinct typographical formats.

Social network systems, like last.fm, play a significant role in Web 2.0, containing large amounts of multimedia-enriched data that are enhanced both by explicit user-provided annotations and implicit aggregated feedback describing the personal preferences of each user. It is also a common tendency for these systems to encourage the creation of virtual networks among their users by allowing them to establish bonds of friendship and thus provide a novel and direct medium for the exchange of data.
